We’re not meteorologists but the answer is 100% yes, if you’re coming to the Nutcracker!
Nutcracker of Middle Georgia (NMG) has a glistening new snow scene backdrop! It was a thrilling moment to witness The Grand’s stagehands hang this beauty on the stage this week. We are excited to see it come to life in December with Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Snowflakes score, the magical snow falling all around, and the spinning ballerinas!
The history of the NMG backdrop
The new theatre canvas backdrop was needed after the first backdrop, purchased in 1989, started to show signs of dry rot recently. The original iconic scenery, the vision of our late founding director, Jean Evans Weaver, was crafted by her New York friend, Bobby Berg, around 1989-90. Since then, the NMG board and volunteers have taken meticulous care of it, but 33 years of use took their toll. It was time to completely replace the backdrop.
The team that made it possible
If you’ve ever seen the performance, you can imagine what it takes to create such a beautiful, moving and professional show. To go above and beyond, it takes serious dedication and commitment.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Tony Long, whose long-standing relationship with NMG and his efforts to get this critically important backdrop replaced ensure we have the most beloved Nutcracker around – one our middle Georgia community can be proud of.
Thanks to Managing Director Frank Wood and The Grand stagehands who hoisted the huge backdrop so we could get a sneak preview.
And many thanks to the Josephine Phelps Fabian Fund of the Community Foundation of Central Georgia for their generous grant. CFCGA is a long-time supporter of NMG, and we are always grateful for their engagement in the arts.
